Dwight Joseph Is Ready To Become a Star in PFL Africa

The Professional Fighters League’s international branding has continued in a big way this year, with the launch of PFL Africa coming into the spotlight. After the new league was featured on the first PFL Champions Series event of 2025, it returned for what may have just been the best PFL event of the year: PFL Africa 2 on Aug. 9.

One of the biggest highlights in Johannesburg came from new featherweight signee Dwight Joseph, who landed a flying knee in the second round against Wilker Nsamo in dramatic fashion to close the show. The explosive victory was Joseph’s PFL debut and was a statement that he is not only a factor in the PFL Africa tournament, but appointment viewing as well.

In an interview with Sherdog.com, the 36-year-old Liberian discussed his win in Johannesburg, being part of PFL Africa, and what he hopes to achieve for his future in the promotion.

While the fight started out slowly, Joseph said he recognized that both he and Nsamo were looking for their right spots and opportunity, which took longer than expected, but patience was the name of his game.

“I think we were both playing the same type of game, trying to find our spots, trying to be defensively sound while also trying to score. It did take some time to get there, I couldn’t quite get my range on him early, but in the second round I knew things had to start picking up. He was picking it up, so I was picking it up, and leading up to the flying knee, we both were looking to get an edge to close out the round. I was looking to close out the round in a big way but I also knew he’d be looking for the same. I had something waiting for him when he tried to bring his own big attack and that was the knee.”

As someone who is of African descent and has also put in all of the hard work throughout his career, the Team Alpha Male export said he is thrilled to be part of PFL Africa, in part because of the ease of finding suitable opponents.

“It was getting to the point where it was hard to land fights, we would be lucky to get one or two fights in a year. This year I had quite a few fights fall through so I just started looking and I saw PFL was having events in Africa, and I remember reaching out to my coach Urijah Faber and telling him about my interest in PFL Africa. He reached out and a couple weeks went by and we didn’t hear anything but then PFL came to him and they agreed to get me on the card. It was awesome to get on the card and have a fight on African soil.”

Although he’s fought in Legacy Fighting Alliance and Dana White's Contender Series, Joseph relishes the opportunity to fight in Africa and represent Liberia.

“I think that’s the most exciting part about this opportunity and experience. I’ve never had an experience on a card like this, I walked in and every fighter on the card looked like me. Usually I’m the minority on the card but especially now, sharing a card with African fighters, it’s special. I’ve been representing Liberia since I was an amateur and I’m still doing that to this day. So when I saw there were other fighters from other African countries, it made it more special for me. I think PFL is doing the right thing.”

In being part of PFL Africa, Joseph has the opportunity to not only capitalize and win the featherweight tournament, but catapult himself onto the PFL global stage and become a star, something he feels he already is.

“I thought I already was a star. I’m not here to just take part or just have one fight, I want to grow in this organization. I want to grow in this sport. I’m in the tournament so I’m here to win it all. I’ve got one fight down and I’ve got two more to go. I want to showcase myself and improve each and every fight I’m out there.”
